It is my pleasure to welcome you to UMMC and especially to the UMMC vascular surgery fellowship program. Under the leadership of Dr. Fred Rushton, we were accredited by the ACGME in 2011, although we have been training vascular surgeons since 1974.

The vascular surgery fellowship is an independent two-year program in a multi-institutional environment.  Our vascular fellows train at the University of Mississippi Medical Center - the only tertiary care hospital in the state; the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery VA Hospital and St. Dominic’s Hospital. This model is intended to provide the trainee with a well-rounded, high-volume operative experience in both an academic and private practice setting.

The southeastern region of the country has been recognized by public health authorities as having the highest incidence of cardiovascular related diseases. Moreover, the state of Mississippi has the highest incidence within this region, and therefore, the highest incidence of cardiac and vascular diseases in the entire country.

Because of the high propensity for cardiovascular disease in this region, fellows are exposed to the most complicated patient population in the entire country. It is our goal to see that our current fellows and graduates are equipped to both treat the vascular diseases of these patients as well as prepare them for the entire spectrum of their management, including surgical interventions when all other options have been exhausted.

We have a well-established environment of cooperation and mutual respect among the faculty on the vascular surgery team as well as all physicians and other health care personnel outside of our division. Our model of teaching is based on direct apprentice instruction and small group discussions.
